Solar storm lights up sky across the US

Could another 'Carrington Event' solar storm happen?

A potent solar storm prompted the first severe geomagnetic storm watch in nearly two decades in the U.S., dazzling observers with vivid Northern Lights as far south as Florida, while raising concerns about potential disruptions to communication and GPS systems.

Rare G5 geomagnetic storm triggers Northern Lights in US

An 'extreme' G5-level solar storm is happening for the first time since 2003, triggering Northern Lights in some Southern states as far as Alabama and Georgia. LiveNOW's Austin Westfall spoke about the celestial phenomenon with SWPC Coordinator Shawn Dahl.

Solar storm watch: Geomagnetic watch issued

An unusually strong solar storm hitting Earth could produce northern lights in the U.S. this weekend and potentially disrupt power and communications. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a rare severe geomagnetic storm warning when a solar outburst reached Earth on Friday afternoon, hours sooner than anticipated. The effects were due to last through the weekend and possibly into next week.
